The Casper Events Center in Casper Wyoming was the site of a very kick butt concert put on by the 80's legends Motley Crue. For years I've heard that these guys put on a heck of show and by all means they did not disappoint. The "Carnival Of Sins Tour" features a circus theme that had the stage looking like a deranged circus from hell. The show started off with a claymation movie about a giant asteroid hurtling towards earth. And the boys in the band were going to save the earth by getting back together to stop the asteroid. The screen goes up and a very evil looking midget clown comes out and introduces the band. They then go into one of the band's early anthems "Shout At The Devil". The first set of the show was early Crue heaven with such classics as "Too Fast For Love," " Red Hot, " and "Looks That Kill". Even though the arena was less than half full, the guys rocked big time. I've never been a huge Mick Mars fan but I found his live playing better than what I expected. The guy gets around the stage pretty good for all that he's been through physically. Vince Neil's voice sounded pretty good, and Nikki Sixx's showmanship is some of the best I've ever seen. The band took a ten minute intermission, then the house lights went down again and you could the sounds of motorcycle engines. Could it be? Yes! The band entered the stage on motorcycles and tore into "Girls, Girls, Girls".
"Wild Side" was next, which set up the one two punch of "Don't Go Away Mad" and "Primal Scream". After a killer version of "Dr. Feelgood," (Is there any other?) this is were things went bad. Tommy Lee played a short drum solo on his regular kit. He than stepped onto the front of the stage and asked the crowd if they wanted some more. He was then hoisted up into the air onto one of two mini stages up on the lighting rig. He would then fly back and forth from one stage to the other playing along to some kind of taped techno music. The last time he was on the drums that was stage right he also played some keyboards. During the solo some sparks went off. This was nothing unusual as the amount of pyro these guys had going on all night long was unreal.
The lights went down again and in the shadows you could seeing Tommy being hoisted back down on the stage. As he was being lowered you could hear him muttering some cuss words through his wireless Mic. The lights went back up and Tommy was back at his regular kit looking rather dazed. He than proceeded to ask the crowd if they knew how much he loved playing his drums for them, which of course brought out wild cheers. After clicking off the intro to "Same Ol Situation" things seemed okay. "SOS" by the way kicked butt big time! Before the song was over Tommy hopped up and took off in a dead run off the back of the stage. As the song ended Vince and Nikki turned around and there's no Tommy! They looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders and walked off the stage. A minute later Nikki came out and told the crowd that Tommy was backstage getting a blowjob! (How Rock and Roll Is that?!) After a few minutes of having the crowd see which section could be the loudest you could tell something was up. Nikki then left the stage and came back out with Vince. They then let the crowd know that Tommy had been injured by some pyro and that they wouldn't be able to finish the show. Big time bummer folks, as I had traveled 360 miles to see this concert. Up to that point the concert was very, very good. The stage show was very cool and the band sounded great. Hopefully they will be able to come back to my neck of the woods soon. As I need to hear "Kick Start My Heart" live before I die.
