Apocalyptica
8 April 2005 – Leipzig , Haus Auensee
REVIEW BY NADJA
They don’t need any advertising, but their shows are mostly sold out! Like recently at Leipzig, one station of a successful world tour.
The support band “Angelzoom” was welcomed wildly by the audience; obviously I was the only one who didn’t know them. And I can’t say that they’ve convinced me with their sound of keyboards, violin, cello and classical female vocals. It was too much synthesizers for my taste, and all of their songs were too similar in my opinion.
Apocalyptica were welcomed even more wildly as they entered stage. Four celli and drums, it doesn’t need much to make a great show!
There was nothing else on stage besides four huge chairs and a drum kit. The backs of the chairs were shaped like caskets with cut out skulls, what looked great with the fantastic light show.
They started their show seated, but the later the evening got, the livelier they became! It started with banging their heads and ended up with them running across the stage, always the cello in one hand! Only Antero stayed seated the whole show, always serious faced with sunglasses wearing a dark suit.
Eicca and Perrtu did all the talking while Paavo did the entertaining! Drummer Mikko did an outstanding job, without any problems he handled the drum part of “Betrayel / Forgiveness”, originally played by Slayer’s Dave Lombardo.
Basically they played songs of their latest albums “Reflection” and “Apocalyptica” like “Farewell”, “Toreador II”, “Somewhere around nothing” or “Quutamo”, “Life Burns!” and “Bittersweet” from their latest release, played just instrumental, were as good as the album versions with vocals.
There is no Apocalyptica show without at least a few of their cover versions, the ones like “Nothing else matters” or “Refuse / Resist” were definitively the high peak of their show!
They treated their cello that you wonder how the instrument could survive the show at all! They played on the neck, below the bridge, they waved the celli in the air and sometimes I thought they would smash it in the next moment! They climbed on their chairs and at the drum platform, and Eicca joined Mikko at the drums. The audience went crazy! Yeah they were having a great time; we all had a great time!
The regular part ended with a drum solo, the encores started with a drum solo followed by Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. As final song they celebrated Edward Grieg’s “Hall Of The Mountain King”!
They left stage, but the lights didn’t fade out, they came back on stage without cello for another moment. “Bittersweet” was aired and the musicians jumped off stage and were suddenly gone …
What a great night! A great show, moderate prices for drinks and food, even the merchandise was affordable! Only the security took their job a bit too serious!
