Concert Report by Bucky for Rock N Roll Universe
Former Max Webster guitarist/singer Kim Mitchell took Artpark to the Max as he rocked out to a 2 hour set showcasing his solo career which consists of 9 albums & his career with Max Webster. Before Kim & band hit the stage, a huge backdrop was unfurled consisting of the Canadian flag with Kim Mitchell’s name printed in huge red letters. Later he told how the banner was given to him as a gift from someone in Sweden. The band hit the stage to a carnival sound of his 1986 single “Patio Lanterns” and cranked into a rocking instrumental before launching into"Rocklandwonderland”. From there, he went into “That’s the Hold” off his ‘Shaking Like a Human Being’ album. Mitchell talked a bit about divorce before reaching back to his ‘Akimbo Alogo’ album and played “That’s a Man”. Kim had said earlier that he planned on playing a few Max Webster tunes which he kept his word by jamming out “A Million Vacations,” "Paradise Skies,” "In the World Of Giants,” Oh War” and “Battle Scar”. The one thing great about seeing Kim Mitchell is as far as a setlist you have no idea what he’s going to play as he always plays a few surprises. Besides the Max tunes he played “Wonder Where & Why” and “Lemon Wedge” off his 1994 release ‘Itch’ and “Pure As Gold” from 1992’s ‘Aural Fixation’ album. The audience joined in by participating as Kim rocked out “I Am a Wild Party”.
Longtime bassist Peter Fredette really let his vocals/backing vocals shine throughout the show, especially on the Canadian single"All That We Are” and Kim Michell’s biggest hit “Go For a Soda,” both off the ‘Akimbo Alogo’ album. Everytime I’ve seen Kim Mitchell he always seems to sneak in the guitar solo from Max Webster’s “Beyond the Moon,” which he added to at the end of “Lager & Ale”. Kim finished the night by creating a buzz, buzz, buzz with “Rock & Roll Duty” off his ‘Rockland' album. Overall it was a great
Rock & Roll show and Kim is an amazing guitarist. Mitchell said he should have a new CD out this fall and did play one new song that was incredible called”Killer’s Name”(I believe that was the title) in which he played without the band. Kim’s official website is www.kimmitchell.ca
